Calprotectin is a protein expressed mainly by myeloid cells. It recruits monocytes to the site of inflammation and is believed to be a mediator of chronic inflammation.
Faecal calprotectin is a reliable differentiating marker for IBD and IBS in a non-invasive stool test. Monitoring levels of faecal calprotectin can also help determine the efficacy of clinical interventions in IBD management.
Raised levels of calprotectin can indicate bacterial or parasitic infections, colorectal cancer or disorders associated with intestinal inflammation such as Crohn's disease and colitis.
